HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR THE SUMMER HEAT

Summer Heat. Stop and Go Traffic. DUST!!! Especially here in the valley, can and will take a toll on your vehicle. Like we always say routine maintenance is cheaper than repairs. So, how can you make sure that your car is prepared for the summer months?

Check out the areas of concern you will want to maintain to ensure that your vehicle runs its very best:

AIR CONDITIONING:

Routinely have your AC System Check by a qualified technician. You will want to have your cabin filters checked if you have a newer model vehicle. These filters clean the air that enters your vehicle through your heating and AC System. Your vehicles AC System is very important in the summer months.

ANTI-FREEZE & COOLING SYSTEM:

The most common causes of summer breakdowns is vehicle overheating. Your cars coolant system plays a direct role in avoiding this problem. Ensure that your coolant system and levels are at the prescribed levels to ensure optimal performance

ENGINE OIL:

This area is often avoided at the expense of the owner. We have all put off oil changes feeling that we can go for just a bit more before having the filters and fluid changed. Typically you want to have your fluids and filters changed every 3-7k miles (respectively). This change should take place more if you make frequently short trips, or extended trips while hauling trailers and such. Bring your vehicle in regularly to change oil and filters to avoid complications to your vehicle.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE:

Replace other filters regularly as well. AIR,FUEL, ETC. This is more important if you live in areas that are subject to duty atmospheres. Engine problems such as hard starts, rough idles, and stalling can be a result of dusty dirty filters. These problems are amplified in the summer months because of the heat.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS:

Dirty windshield can cause problems with vision, especially at night with oncoming traffic. This is an often overlooked safety hazard.

TIRES:

Check your tire pressure at least once a week. Do this in the morning when the temps are cooler. This will give you the most accurate measurement of PSI. A lot of people overlook the spare tire so make sure that this is being checked as well. The last thing you need is a blowout and find out that your spare is useless. You will want to rotate your tires every 5-10k miles. You will want to check the side walls for nicks and cuts that can be dangerous. If your alignment is off this will also cause your tires to wear faster.

BRAKES:

If you noticed noises and sounds coming from your brakes that are out of the ordinary, make sure that you get them check ASAP.

CAR BATTERY:

Batteries will fail no matter what time of year it is. But, the summer heat can be especially grueling on your battery life. So, if you have a vehicle that is parked outside in the summer months you will want to get the battery checked more often. Make sure to check the cables, before and after long trips, and watch your fluid levels in the hotter months.
